This is not the Hāna tour you’ve seen a hundred times. A private day on the Road to Hāna, or all the way to Haleakalā for sunset, with a local storyteller who tells Hawaiʻi’s story as it really happened. Swim the waterfalls, eat the banana bread, laugh the whole way, and go home actually knowing this island.

Who this day is for

Some come to listen to the land. Some come for the best day of the trip. Everyone goes home a little changed.

If you travel with intention

You want more than a checklist. You want to understand the place that’s hosting you: how a valley once fed its people from mountain to sea, why taro and water matter here, what happened to Hawaiʻi and what’s still alive. You’ll hear it told straight, with no invented legends and no tourist myths. This is the real thing, and it’s the reason you came.

If you just want the real Maui

You want waterfalls you can swim in, banana bread still warm from the oven, and a local who knows exactly which turn the big buses miss. Relax: there are no ceremonies, no lectures and nothing awkward. It’s an easygoing, fun local day with great stories along the way, and you take in as much or as little of them as you like.

Either way, the moment you settle into the seat and the first bridge comes into view, the day starts to belong to you.

Feel the air turn cool and green as the rainforest closes in. Swim beneath falls running cold from the mountain, stand on black stones where a river meets the sea, and look out over the taro fields of Keʻanae while you hear how a whole valley was fed from mountain to sea. By the time you reach Hāna, you’ll understand this coast, not just photograph it.

Spend the day in the rainforest, then climb above the clouds. Somewhere past ten thousand feet the world goes quiet, the sky turns gold, and the sun sinks into a sea of white below you. We believe aloha is the answer.

We mean a way of living that cares for land and people at the same time. The world needs that now more than ever, and Hawaiʻi has practiced it for generations.

A doorway, then a way home.

The day on Maui is the doorway. Live Aloha at Home carries the wisdom of the ahupuaʻa, mountain to sea, into people’s own neighborhoods, families and work.

A film for everyone who can’t come.

Aloha Always Wins, three years in the making, will carry these stories much further than any tour can. Every day we run helps bring it to the screen.

Why this day stands apart

Here’s exactly what your price pays for.

A Living Aloha day costs more than a seat on a bus, and it should. Most Hāna tours show you the stops. This one helps you understand them.

Your guide

A local storyteller and steward

Your day is led by a local guide who has spent years on this road, learning it from the people it belongs to. They share what they know, name who taught them, and would rather say “I don’t know” than make something up.

As Hawaiian practitioners choose to join our days, you’ll meet them in person, sharing their places and knowledge on their own terms. We name them here only once they say yes.

Why Living Aloha

The world is changing. You can feel it.

Life moves faster every year. Food travels thousands of miles to reach our tables. Neighbors stay strangers, the land gets used up, and families carry old hurts with nowhere to set them down. Somewhere underneath it all, most of us sense there has to be a better way to live.

There is, and Hawaiʻi has lived it for centuries. Aloha is the answer.

Not aloha as a greeting, but aloha as a working system: practical ways of caring for land, food, family and each other, so there is more than enough to go around. These ways kept a chain of islands in the middle of the Pacific abundant for generations, and they still work wherever people choose to live them.

  • AhupuaʻaMountain to sea

Seeing where you live as one connected system, ridge to reef, where what happens upstream feeds everyone below. A model for a neighborhood, a family or a business.

  • ʻĀina momonaAbundant land

Growing food in ways that build the earth up instead of using it up: the wisdom of the loʻi kalo, alongside today’s regenerative tools like compost and biochar.

  • LōkahiCommunity

Work shared, harvests shared, nobody left out. The quiet math of an island: when everyone gives, everyone has enough.

  • HoʻoponoponoMaking it right

The Hawaiian practice of setting family relationships right, traditionally guided by a respected elder. Shared only as practitioners choose to share it.

You’ll feel them on the road. Then we help you carry them home.

These are living practices that belong to Hawaiian families and practitioners. We share them only as they choose to share them, and we never invent what isn’t ours to tell.

Growing from here

The day is just the beginning. Here’s what’s taking root.

Opening to guests

Live Aloha at Home

You won’t leave empty-handed. A keepsake of your day, then a path that keeps unfolding after you fly home: ways to see your own watershed from ridge to sea, and to care for it the way an island would.

In the works

Culture days with Hawaiian practitioners

Days shaped and shared by Hawaiian practitioners, on their terms, with their knowledge credited and paid for. We’re building these slowly, and properly.

In the works

Aloha Always Wins

A documentary three years in the making, about why aloha still wins. Days like yours help bring it to the screen.

Before you book

Good questions, honest answers.

Where do you pick us up?

Anywhere on Maui: your hotel, condo, vacation rental or the cruise pier. Your guide texts the night before with their name and number, then again in the morning with the vehicle they’re in, and brings you back to the same spot.

Is it really private?

Yes. The vehicle and the guide are yours alone for the day. No strangers, no shared seats, no fixed schedule to keep pace with.

What if someone gets carsick?

Our guides drive this road for a living and pace the curves to match. Bring motion medicine if it gives you peace of mind, though most guests find they never need it.

Is it comfortable for older travelers or little ones?

Very. Roomy SUVs, a gentle pace and a stop whenever anyone needs one. Tell us who’s coming and your guide plans around them.

What’s your cancellation policy?

Full refund with 24 hours’ notice. If weather or anything outside your control gets in the way, you get a full refund or a credit, whatever the timing.

What should we bring?

Shoes that can get muddy, reef-safe sunscreen, a swimsuit and towel, and a little cash for the fruit stands. For the sunset tour, bring warm layers: the summit gets cold once the sun goes down. Water and snacks are on us.

The First Circle

Walk with us from the very beginning.

First word of new days, the film, and Live Aloha at Home goes to the founding circle. A few letters a season, never more.
